Eli Manning and the New York Giants played a great game tonight as they defeated the New England Patriots 17-14 to win the Super Bowl!

It was a great game! To me, the defining moment was when Manning was moving his team down the field in the 4th quarter after they fell behind 14-10 — and appeared to be tackled — but broke loose and threw a pass that was almost batted away — but was caught to keep the drive alive. (Update: This was the end to that play:). They scored a few plays later to win the game. It was indeed a great game!

As for my favorite commercial, in my opinion none was better than this one: You can see it here.

It is refreshing to see professional athletes and coaches who are not ashamed to talk about their faith in Christ. The head coaches of the 2 Super Bowl teams — Lovie Smith of the the Chicago Bears and Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts — are taking the time to share their faith.

Here’s an article I found at Ronnie Floyd’s blog on their testimony:

MIAMI (BP) — Super Bowl XLI will feature two teams making their first super game appearance in two-plus decades, two Midwestern teams separated by only a couple hundred miles, but most importantly two coaches who are strong believers in Jesus Christ.

Head coaches Tony Dungy of Indianapolis and close friend and fellow Christian Lovie Smith of Chicago gave credit to God following their respective teams’ victories in the conference championships Jan. 21.

“The Lord set this up in a way that no one would believe it,” Dungy said following the Colts’ win over New England. “The Lord tested us a lot this year, but he set this up to get all the glory.”

The news that two witnesses for their personal faith in Jesus Christ would have a two-week international spotlight for their beliefs thrilled Christian leader William Pugh, executive director of sports ministry’s Athletes in Action (AIA), a branch of Campus Crusade for Christ.

“We are so excited to see the Bears and Colts in the Super Bowl,” said Pugh, a close friend of both head coaches. “We could not have picked two better coaches to represent all that is good about sports.”

AIA organizes and runs the annual Super Bowl breakfast the day before the game. Last year, Dungy was the keynote speaker just weeks after his son’s tragic death, giving an inspirational message about God’s love in the best and worst of times.

Smith is in his first tenure as a head coach and hasn’t had the public opportunities to share his faith like Dungy, but he has told the Chicago media he believes in Christ, listens to Christian music when driving his car, and does not smoke, drink, or curse.

“I’m so happy for Lovie who does things the right way, without cursing and shows things can be done differently,” Dungy said of Smith. “We give God all the credit.”

Dungy has served as the cover spokesman for a special Super Bowl witnessing video and tract. Several of his players, including star tight end Dallas Clark, put out a special faith-based DVD entitled Power to Win about their faith in Christ and their need to honor him in all that they do.

While the media will concentrate on the game itself, the men in charge of leading their teams to the big game plan on sharing the most important things in their life, something that has nothing to do with runs or passes or even the final score.

Feel free to share this post with others — and encourage them to share their faith!

OK — before I get to work — I’ll share one more fun thing I found today.

If you are a football fan (like my nephew Rob and I are)this might be fun. You can do the math here and — starting with the number of complete NFL games you watch a week during the regular season — come up with your age.

Hey — I did it and it works!

Grab a calculator and work this out as you go:

1. First thing, pick the number of complete NFL games you normally watch in one week of the regular season. (Please pick more than one but less than ten).

2. Multiply this number by 2

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add, 1755. If you
haven’t had your birthday yet, add 1754.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born. You should
have a three digit number now.

The first digit of this was your original number (How many NFL games
per week you watch).

The next two numbers are…

Your age.

Pretty cool — huh?

I know this works — the guys at Footballguys told me so!

Until next time — Peace! Bill

This morning I blogged about Internet Evangelism Day — but it seems there is something else going on today also — o yea — it’s the NFL Draft!

This is a day of light in the midst of darkness that exists from the end of the NCAA Basketball Tournament until the start of the NFL pre season. No offense to you baseball lovers out there — I do enjoy baseball — but football and college basketball are my passions! I gusess it runs in the family!

Anyway — the picture above is of Alex Smith, the former Quarterback from Utah, who was the first pick in the draft this year. He was chosen by San Francisco — a 2-14 team last season, who could probably use a good QB!

Then there is this handsome “man in black”

He’s Troy Williamson from the University of South Carolina. He was chosen 7th and will be playing Wide Receiver for the Minnesota Vikings. Don’t expect him to be as good as Randy Moss — yet — but he will do well!

Then — in the 3rd round — Denver chose Maurice Clarrett. He has finally made it into the pros! You may remember that Clarrett has played 1 college season — and has been trying to get into the pros for a couple of years. All I can say is “Come on and show us what you’ve got!”
