Gamecocks Champions In Many Ways

This is john Taylor, a member of Hopewell Presbyterian (the Church I serve) and also a relief pitcher on the University of South Carolina baseball team that is currently playing in the College World Series (and currently undefeated in the series, I might add!). I have always been a big fan of Gamecock sports, and since moving to Florence and meeting John have followed him with great interest.

While I am proud of what they are doing on the field (they won the national championship last year and if they keep winning will do it again this year) I am very proud also of what they are doing off the field. In this picture John is joining his team mates in visiting a children’s hospital and making the lives of the patients brighter.

Whatever they accomplish on the filed, what they are accomplishing off the field makes them champions!

How ‘Bout Them Dogs?

I have to admit that I have been glued to the TV this week watching the College World Series — which turned out to be — umm — a real dogfight!

The Georgia Bulldogs vs. the Fresno State Bulldogs.

3 great games with plenty of drama — and Fresno State winning their first CWS title — and being the lowest seeded team to ever win the College World Series.

It was fun to watch!

The Clock Tolls Midnight

The clock struck midnight for the Davidson Wildcats — the “Cinderella Story” of this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament — as they lost to Kansas 59-57 this afternoon.

It was truly a great run for Davidson — and a great game today — but in the end Kansas outlasted them.

Now for the final four — and the four regionally ranked #1 teams battling it out next weekend for the championship.

This is how the brackets look now.

This is my projection for how it would look at this point in the tournament. Yikes!

Davidson On A Roll

Stephen Curry shows who is #1 in scoring so far in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. He has scored 103 points in 3 games to take Davidson to the Elite Eight — including his 33 tonight as Davidson continued to upset higher seeded teams — this time beating Wisconsin 73-56!

Presbyterians Play Hoops (And Bust Brackets)

These are the Cinderella’s of this year’s NCAA Basketball Tournament. They are from Davidson — a Presbyterian college in Davidson, NC. They beat Georgetown last weekend — advancing to the round of the Sweet 16! They play Wisconsin on Friday.

If only I had stayed true to my Presbyterian schools and picked them!

They Were Giants

Eli Manning and the New York Giants played a great game tonight as they defeated the New England Patriots 17-14 to win the Super Bowl!

It was a great game! To me, the defining moment was when Manning was moving his team down the field in the 4th quarter after they fell behind 14-10 — and appeared to be tackled — but broke loose and threw a pass that was almost batted away — but was caught to keep the drive alive. (Update: This was the end to that play:). They scored a few plays later to win the game. It was indeed a great game!

As for my favorite commercial, in my opinion none was better than this one: You can see it here.

Souper / Super Bowl

OK — I admit it — I love football — and will probably watch the Super Bowl this Sunday — or at least part of it.

Don’t forget The Souper Bowl of Caring — a great way for churches to work together to do something about poverty. What I love about the Souper Bowl of Caring is that it began with the youth of one Church — Spring Valley Presbyterian in Columbia, SC — and has grown into a worldwide effort to fight poverty.

As far as the game, I’d love to see the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, but really don’t think it will happen! It will be fun, though!

Cheated

I guess I should have seen it coming. The Mitchell Report on steroid use in baseball names many players — including Roger Clemens — as having used steroids.

Whether any of these will be banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame remains to be seen.

It would be too hard to try to change the record books at this time — and even putting asterisks by their records won’t really change anything.

The fact is that some of the greatest names in baseball cheated.

The fact is I — as a fan — feel cheated.

The fact is that it’s sad.
