238 Years of Ministry

238 years — that’s how long the congregation of Hopewell Presbyterian (the Church I serve) has been doing ministry in the Claussen area around what is now Florence, SC.

There is an old tree outside my office window at the Church. It could probably tell many stories.

Francis Marion — the Revolutionary War hero who camped beside the Church and recruited folks to fight against the British.
Young men who signed up to fight in the War Between The States — or women who stayed behind and kept plantations running while the men went to fight.
Folks who served in World War I — World War II –Korea — Viet Nam — Iraq — and many other places of battle where they were needed.
Certainly discussions took place close to this tree about politics — national, state, county, and Church — and decisions where made that would effect the Church and comuinity.

Through it all, God has been at work through the members of Hopewell. In good times and bad, times of faith and times of doubt, times of faithful service and times of struggle, God has been with the members of Hopewell — calling them to greater things they can do for God and the world.
