A Skipper Or An Equipper?

Ephesians 4:1-16 tells us that we need to “equip the saints” for ministry. The question is — how do we do this? Many ministers feel that the best way to do this is to preach quality sermons and maybe teach Bible Studies and other classes — trying to set the direction of the Church in much the same way a skipper of a boat charts the course but leaves the hands – on running of the ship to the crew.

Alan Nelson at Rev.Org argues that we need to adopt a hands on style to truly equip the members of the Church. The more hands on we are in our ministry, he says, the more involved we become in equipping the saints, and the more prepared the members are for adding their gifts to the ministry of the Church.

He concludes with this statement:

The bottom line is that we reap what we sow. If we only sow methods that result in education, but not transformation, we’ll see lackluster outcomes in our people. Equipping is far more than Sunday preaching and mid-week Bible teaching. It has to include application and manifestation.
