When The Super Bowl Becomes The Souper Bowl

In 1990, the youth group at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC decided that they could do something to help the hungry people in their community — so on Super Bowl Sunday they collected money that they gave to a local agency that was giving food to the hungry in their area. From these humble beginnings, the Souper Bowl of Caring has grown into an international effort to help feed the hungry in the world.

It’s really simple — youth groups from local churches raise money in various ways, then donate it to a local ministry that works with the hungry in that area. Some groups even volunteer to help those agencies throughout the year as part of the effort.

At Hopewell Presbyterian (the Church I serve) we are going to be taking up a special offering and the money will go to the House of Hope , that not only provides homeless people with food but also a place to stay — as well as rehabilitative services and job training.

I hope your Church will take part — and that you will give — so that we can all be “winners” on Super Bowl Sunday!
