Another Look Back: Top Religion Stories for 2006
January 4th, 2007 · Posted in Christianity, Current Affairs, Reflections, Religion ·Crosswalk.com has compiled a list of the Top 10 Religion Stories of 2006.
Here’s their list:
1. Amish response to Pennsylvania schoolhouse shooting
(At least the first one is not a “scandal”)
2. Ted Haggard steps down from pastorate and NAE
(Well — at least the first one was not a scandal!)
3. Rick Warren in the middle of divisive issues (global warming, AIDS, Syria, Obama)
4. ECUSA/Bishop Jefferts-Schori fallout
5. Muslims offended by Danish cartoons, Pope’s speech
6. Gnosticism Returns (Gospel of Judas/Da Vinci Code film near-simultaneous release)
(I’m not sure it ever went anywhere!)
7. American Christians on the forefront of aid during and after Israeli/Lebanese conflict
8. Christian movies keep coming (End of the Spear, The Nativity, Facing the Giants (and it’s PG rating)
9. Darfur conflict ongoing; some Christian ministries leaving
10. Navy chaplain’s fight to pray in Jesus’ name
Let’s see — by my count there’s 6 that are scandalous / controversial (numbers 2,3,4,5,6,and 10) — 1 that I’m not sure where to put (#9 — It’s horrible what’s going on in Darfur — and I really don’t know what I’d do if I were a missionary there) — and 2 that are great examples of how Chrisitians should live (numbers 1 and 7). Looks like the controversies are 3 times greater than the great examples.
O well — I guess it could be worse!

I was surprised at the number one. I was did not find the Amish reaction to the horrific shooting in Pennsylvania to be “news” at all. I live in a community with many Amish. They are a peaceful, forgiving people. I could not ask for kinder neighbors.

Maybe if all Christians behaved in the way the Amish do, the Amish reaction to the shootings would not be “news”.
