Advent Devotion: Where Do Leaders Come From?

December 19th, 2006 · Posted in Advent Devotions · 0 Comments

The Goshen College Advent Devotion for today is based on Micah 5:2-5.

The author makes this observation:

When I present my ideas to my scholarly colleagues, I am introduced by the prestigious institution that granted my doctoral degree and by the esteemed New Testament scholars under whom I studied. Where is Jesus’ pedigree? What are his credentials? Who are his teachers? Micah proclaims that his strength and majesty comes from God and not from the power brokers, the king makers of Jerusalem.

Like those who questioned Jesus’ authority, I find myself “listening” to and “paying attention” to those who I feel are “properly credentialed” instead of looking for God’s wisdom in all people, and join the author of the devotion for today in this prayer:

I pray this Advent season that wealth, power and prestige not rule over my life but rather the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for love of the world.
