Choosing To Follow Christ

Following Christ is not easy. Not many these days know that as well as Abdul Rahman — an Afghan who converted to Christianity from Islam — and is now facing death for his choice to follow Christ. He has applied for Political Assylum, but, even if he is not put to death, he has certainly learned what Jesus means in Mark 8:34-38:
“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel,£ will save it. 36For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38Those who are ashamed of me and of my words£ in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.â€
May he also learn the meaning of Mark 10:29-30:
Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, others and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.

[...] Jesus gives some very stern words here about what it means to follow Him — especially in Luke 12:49-53 — which brings the Abdul Rahman case to mind again. [...]
