SHROVE TUESDAY:MARDI GRAS

February 28th, 2006 · Posted in The Church Year · 0 Comments

Today is Shrove Tuesdaythe day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.  I began my "Shrove Tuesday obserance" by helping cook pancakes for the Pancake Breakfast at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Reidsville. I’ll be back there tonight to help with the Pancake Supper.

So — you might ask what is the big deal with pancakes?

Shrove Tuesday  — being the last day before Lent – has hitorically been a day for cooking pancakes to get rid of the flour, butter, syrup, and other things that make pancakes so good — but that are "off limits" during the holy season of Lent.  Honestly, it seems to be more of a concession to the general public than a religious  celebraion — giving everyone one more chance to gorge themselves before the season of solemnity.  That is my opinion on the tradtion of Mardi Gras also.

But — the pancakes and parades are fun.  Let’s just remeber that the real religious season begins tomorrow!

Until next time — Shalom!   Bill
