MY “GAME PLAN” FOR LENT

February 27th, 2006 · Posted in THE LENT CHALLANGE · 0 Comments

AsI prepare for Lent to begin on Wednesday,  I am considering  some of the things Lent means to me — or why it is important to me.

I’ll post some more on why it it important to the Christian tradition later, but first I want to consider why it is important to me.

Lent is — for me — a time for study and action.

So — what is my "game plan" for Lent?

1.  Spend some time every day in study and reflection. I will be using Rob’s Lent ChallangeLent Challange (there is still time for more to sign up) and hope to find more devotional sites.  I will post my reflections here — as well as at the Lent Challange.

2. Try to find a specific a new way to put my commitment to Christ into action. This could be a new  project that will reach out to others with God’s love, or it could be doing something else in my work at the Reidsville Outreach Center or the Church  that will reach people in a different way.  I’m not sure the direction it will take yet, but will pray and try to follow where God leads.   I’ll be blogging about this, too.

This plan for study and action  will be my way of responding to Christ — who calls His followers to give of themselves and follow Him. I love the way Eugene Peterson translates Christ’s words in Mark 8:34-35 in his translation The Message:

Calling the
crowd to join his disciples, he said, “Anyone who intends to come with me has to
let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run
from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. 35Self-help is no
help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to saving yourself, your true
self.

OK  Jesus — I want you to drive!

What are some of your thoughts on Lent — and plans for Lent?

Until next time — Shalom!  Bill
