SEASON OF ADVENT

November 28th, 2005 · Posted in The Church Year · 0 Comments

Yesterday began The Season Of Adventthe season in the Church Year when we  reflect on God’s coming into our lives through Jesus Christ.  While it leads up to Christmas — and the miracle of God coming in human flesh to be one of us — it also focuses on the Second Coming of Christ — and what that means for us, also.

One major theme of Advent that I like to emphasize is preparing for Christ.  Unless we repent of our sins and turn to God the miracle of Christmas will have no real meaning for us.  Just as John The Baptist preceeded the ministry of Christ with a message to repent — the Season of Advent preceeds the celebration of Christmas with a message to give God control of our lives and work for God’s kingdom of love, justice, and peace in the world.

This theme of Advent seems to get lost in our rush to get ready for Christmas.  In fact, the commercialization of Christmas seems to have replaced the real celebration of God coming into our world through Jesus Christ.  Try to make this Advent more spiritual — and less commercial.  This is not easy — but can be rewarding!

I found a great post about Advent – with some good resources — at Monastic Mumblings . Try to find ways to celebrate the true meaning of Adent this season!
