A Preacher Looks At 50
August 27th, 2005 · Posted in Reflections ·Jimmy Buffet has a song "A Pirate Looks At 40" — in which a "pirate" reflects on turning 40. Well — here I am — a preacher turning 50! Today is my 50th birthday — and I am going to celebrate with a party that started out being with just a few friends — but has exploded into a Hawaiian Luau with over 100 people coming! I am truly humbled by the number of people who are coming to celebrate with me — and looking forward to celebrating my 50th in grand style! It will be a lot of fun — great food — and more than "just a few" friends!
But — I do want to reflect a bit about turning 50. It is a milestone that does not need to be passed without giving it some thought. It is really a time to reflect on what life is about. So — what is life about for me? Those of you who regularly read my blog know that my faith is important to me — and how I live it out every day is important. Every day I try to remember one of my favorite passages of scripture — Micah 6:8:
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
If I can live by that — my life will be well spent. Of course, there are many times I do not live by that — but I thank God every day that I am forgiven for my sins — and strengthened for new life.
One of my friends told me that turning 50 is not that bad — and it certainly beat the alternative! I have to agree — it certainly does beat the alternative — and I pray I can continue to serve God and others in whatever form that service may take.
But for now — I’m off to get ready for the luau! Aloha!
