Reflections On The Week: July 24 - 31 2005

July 31st, 2005 · Posted in Current Affairs, Politics, Reflections, THEOLOGY / RELIGION ·

Thankfully this was a relatively "slow week" in the news — after the last 4 weeks it was time for things to "quiet down" somewhat!

From reading my last 3 weekly reflection posts — which (you can read here, here, and here ) you can see that I have been trying to present the fact that God is still in charge of the world — even in the midst of bombings and other acts of terrorism, natural disasters, and what I see as blunders and mistakes by political leaders. I started doing this the week after Live 8 and the London Bombings to show that – even though I did not "jump on the Live 8 Bandwagon" getting involved in peaceful change — and taking positive action — was a much better way to effect change in the world than bombings that do a lot of harm and little good. I have continued the past several weeks to try to show God in the midst of the events of the world. I do this not because I think God needs me to prove His existence or His presence — God can do that without my help — but because I want to remind myself — and others — of God’s presence in our lives.

Nothing really strikes me as needing a lot of comment from this past week — I have been busy with my life at the Church and the Outreach Center (although I did shave off my beard after having if for 22 years) — and the news has not been filled with the same types of stories as the last several weeks. I have been somewhat engaged in my blogs with PBS Watcher over the "bombing Mecca" deal — which has been helpful to me because it has given me a chance to think about what I do feel about this topic. My opinion on the bombing Mecca option has not changed — indiscriminate violence is never an option — even in the face of nuclear attackRead the posts here, here, and here for more on my feelings on this subject.

God is in the midst of all the events of life — the good and bad, the joyous and painful, the beautiful and the horrific.

This is not to say that God sends all these things — or even wills them — but it is to say that God is with us in all of them — and in the midst of them we can serve God by celebrating the good and praying for those affected by the bad — and working for more good in the world.
